As International Women’s Day is just around the corner, we would like to bring up a topic that many women can relate to these days. Being a mother is one of life’s greatest joys for many women. Yet many are unaware of how difficult it is to combine motherhood with the demanding and hectic modern way of life. Reconciling work and motherhood while maintaining a balanced lifestyle can be a challenge. Still, self-care should always remain a priority to maintain a healthy mind and body.

But how can mothers make time for self-care? Easier said than done, we know! That’s why we spoke to Iris Merola, a great all-round mother, about her tips and tricks for making time for herself. Alongside being a full-time mum, Iris is a digital creator, housewife, make-up artist and fitness enthusiast. Iris shares with us her approachable ways she incorporates wellness into her own routine.

  1. Don’t overdo it. One or two workouts a week is enough

As a mother, it can be difficult to make time to do sport every day. Don’t overdo it and go easy on yourself. Doing too much exercise and then feeling exhausted is not ideal. That’s why Iris goes to the gym once or twice a week. She also keeps active by walking everywhere.

  1. Fresh, simple and conscious meals

A balanced and healthy meal doesn’t mean you have to spend 2 hours in the kitchen. Iris explained us that she follows a balanced diet every day and always cooks with seasonal ingredients. The key is to “keep it simple and buy fresh ingredients”.

  1. Planning ahead is crucial

Iris plans and organizes everything well in advance. “Planning a weekly schedule gives you time to incorporate self-care into your daily routine”, she explains. Iris writes down her to-do’s  every Sunday to make sure the week goes “smoothly”. When she has free time, she hits the gym or goes in the nature. Coffee and music cheer her up in chaotic moments.

  1. Teamwork makes the dream work

“Quality time with my husband is very precious to me,” says Iris. They try to spend time together when their older son is at school and the younger one is with the nanny. “These breaks are an opportunity to recharge our energy”. She emphasises that she and her husband are always a team.

  1. Don’t strive for perfection: enjoy the moment

One of her last pieces of advice is: “Not everything has to be perfect, you also have to let things at home sometimes to fully enjoy the time with the children and cuddle them a lot”. Although she plans every week, it’s not tragic if something doesn’t go according to plan. Putting duties aside to take care of yourself and have fun is acceptable.
