Collagen is the most common protein in the body. In our bodies, collagen is mainly found in connective tissue where it makes up the majority of the extracellular matrix (ECM). Fibroblasts produce collagen, for which certain amino acids are needed. Collagen is mainly composed of glycine (33%), proline (12%) and hydroxyproline (10%).
Along with other components, collagen forms a structure around the cells (ECM) and is therefore classified as a structural protein. It is important for the adhesion of the body structures (“colla” = glue) and forms a kind of rope structure which is 300 times denser than muscle fibers.
